Whole Life & IUL Insurance in Scottsdale / Arizona

Term life covers a window — the mortgage years, the kids-at-home years, the stretch when one Scottsdale or Phoenix salary could not carry the house. Whole life and indexed universal life (IUL) are permanent products. They are not “term with a better brochure.” Different contracts. Different costs. Different reasons to buy.

This guide is educational, in plain language, for East Valley business owners and higher-income homeowners who want to understand the conversation before they sit down for an application. It is written by Colby Neal / Neal Insurance Agency — not by Farmers corporate.

Start with the goal, not the product name

Before anyone says “whole life” or “IUL,” answer:

  • Is the main job income replacement for a set number of years?
  • Do you need coverage that can stay in force for life (estate, buy-sell, final expenses, long-horizon planning)?
  • Are you also interested in a cash-value feature under a permanent contract — understanding it is not a brokerage account?

Many Arizona households need term life first. Permanent coverage can come later, or alongside a smaller permanent layer, when the goal is lifetime protection rather than a 20-year window. Product fit depends on goals, budget, health, and time horizon. We will not invent a need you do not have.

Term vs whole life vs IUL (high level)

Term life

Death benefit for a chosen term. Usually the lower premium for pure protection during the years that hurt most if you die. No cash-value story on a straight term policy. See our Scottsdale term life guide.

Whole life

Permanent coverage designed to stay in force for life if premiums are paid as required. Premiums are typically level. Many whole life contracts build a cash value over time under guaranteed and (when applicable) non-guaranteed elements defined in the policy — not in a blog post. Whole life is a different contract from term; comparing only the monthly number misses the point.

Indexed universal life (IUL)

A form of universal life where interest credited to the cash-value account may be linked to a market index under the insurer’s rules — caps, participation rates, floors, and charges. IUL does not promise stock-market returns. You are not buying the index. Credits can be zero in some periods; floors (when present) and caps are contract terms, not marketing slogans. Illustrations are hypothetical. Past index performance does not guarantee future credits.

We will not invent sample premiums, illustrated cash-value guarantees, or “you can get $X for $Y a month” on this page. Age, health, nicotine, face amount, riders, and company underwriting drive what is available.

Cash value in plain words

On many permanent policies, a portion of what you pay can accumulate in a cash-value account. Depending on the contract, you may be able to:

  • Borrow against cash value (loans reduce the death benefit if unpaid)
  • Surrender the policy for the net cash surrender value (ends coverage)
  • Use living-benefit or other riders only if they are part of the issued contract

Fees, cost of insurance, loan interest, and tax treatment matter. None of that belongs in a one-size-fits-all web claim. The illustration and the policy form — reviewed with you — are the source of truth.

Who usually asks about permanent life

  • Scottsdale / Paradise Valley / East Valley business owners thinking about buy-sell funding or key-person coverage that may need to last beyond a 20-year term
  • Higher-income households who already have (or are buying) term for the mortgage window and want a permanent layer for estate or legacy goals
  • People who want lifelong final-expense or family protection and understand the premium tradeoff vs term
  • Owners who also carry commercial risk — life and the business file are different applications (Scottsdale commercial insurance)

If the only goal is “replace income until the kids are grown,” start with term. Permanent products are not a mandatory upgrade.

How this agency handles life

We are a Farmers Insurance agency. Colby Neal is a third-generation Farmers agent. Farmers / Farmers Life is the first conversation. If the case is not a Farmers fit, we will say so and talk about what we can actually place. Property and auto may go to other markets when needed (including Kraft Lake markets we access). Life is more company-specific. The phone call is where we sort it.

Licensed in Arizona, California, Oklahoma, and Texas. English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Amanda runs the agency; Dani handles a lot of the service file; Jordan works with us on new business.

Colby came through mortgage and real estate before insurance. Goals first — then product. We will not dress permanent life up as an investment pitch or a “guaranteed market” story.

What to have ready for the call

  • What you are trying to solve (income window, lifetime coverage, business continuity, legacy)
  • Any existing term, group, or permanent life already in force
  • Rough health picture and nicotine status
  • Whether a spouse or business partner should be quoted the same day
  • Budget comfort — permanent premiums are a different conversation than term

No medical records required for the first call. Lying on a life application is how a claim gets contested. Tell us the hard parts in this office.

Call or text (480) 860-0860. We will not send you to an online “check my price” button as the primary step. Permanent life is a conversation, then an application.

FAQ

Should I buy whole life or term first? Many Scottsdale and Phoenix households need term first for income replacement and mortgage years. Permanent products (whole life or IUL) solve different goals. Fit depends on what you are trying to fund — not on a blog slogan. Start with our term life guide if the window is temporary.

Does IUL guarantee market returns? No. Indexed universal life may credit interest linked to an index under contract rules (caps, participation, floors). It is not a brokerage account and past index performance does not promise future credits.

What is cash value in plain words? On many permanent policies, part of what you pay can build a cash-value account you may borrow against or surrender under the contract. Rules, fees, and tax treatment vary. We will not invent illustrated guarantees in a web article.

Do you only write Farmers Life? Farmers / Farmers Life is the first conversation. If the case needs a different path, we will say so. Call (480) 860-0860.

Who is this conversation for? Business owners, higher-income East Valley households, and people with long-horizon legacy or permanent-coverage goals — after the temporary income gap is addressed. Bring your goals; we will not invent a need you do not have.
