Buying or leasing a car in Scottsdale, Phoenix, Tempe, Chandler, or anywhere in the Valley usually happens fast. The test drive is Saturday, the finance office is an hour later, and somebody asks for “proof of insurance” before you get the keys. This guide explains what that request actually means, what the lender or lease company is looking for, and where gap or loan/lease payoff coverage fits.
It is educational, in plain language, and written by Colby Neal / Neal Insurance Agency — not by Farmers corporate. It is not a substitute for your policy wording or your finance contract.

Call before you sign — not after you drive
The cleanest new-car files start with a text from the dealership: year, make, model, VIN, and “who is the bank?” That gives us time to add the car, put the right lienholder on it, and send proof before the finance manager is waiting on you.
Many auto policies give some short-term coverage to a newly acquired vehicle, but how long, and whether it carries your full coverages or only liability, depends on the policy. We will not guess a number of days on this page. The safe habit is simple: the car is on the policy before it leaves the lot.
What the dealer, lender, and MVD each want
- The dealer wants proof that the car is insured before delivery — usually an ID card or a binder with the VIN on it.
- The lender or lease company wants to be named on the policy (loss payee or lienholder, and on many leases an additional insured too), and usually requires comprehensive and collision with a maximum deductible.
- Arizona MVD wants the vehicle insured to register it, and Arizona checks insurance status electronically, so a lapse can create registration headaches later.
The exact lender name, mailing address, and deductible requirement are on the retail installment contract or lease paperwork. Send a photo of that page. Spelling the lienholder correctly the first time saves a week of “we have not received proof of insurance” letters.
Physical damage, deductibles, and what “full coverage” means
“Full coverage” is not a policy form. On a financed or leased car it usually means liability plus comprehensive (theft, glass, hail, fire, animals) and collision. Lenders care about the last two because the car is their collateral.
A lower deductible is not automatically better. Pick one you can actually pay on a bad day, and make sure it is at or below what the contract allows. Rental reimbursement and roadside are worth a look on a car you depend on every day; we will tell you what the policy offers instead of bundling things you did not ask for. The longer conversation is in our Scottsdale auto insurance guide.
Liability limits: the state minimum is a floor
Arizona’s minimum liability is 25/50/15 — $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for injuries, and $15,000 for property damage. A newer vehicle on the road next to you can cost more than $15,000 to repair. A new car payment is also a good moment to look at uninsured / underinsured motorist coverage and whether an umbrella makes sense for the household.
If a teen will drive the new car, read the teen driver guide and tell us who the primary driver is.
Gap and loan / lease payoff, in plain words
Cars lose value quickly, and long loans with little money down can leave you owing more than the car is worth for a while. If the car is totaled or stolen, the auto policy generally pays the vehicle’s actual cash value, not the loan balance. Gap, sometimes called loan or lease payoff coverage, is designed to help with that difference.
Where it tends to matter most:
- Small or no down payment
- Longer loan terms, or negative equity rolled in from a trade
- Leases — though many leases already build gap in, so check the contract before buying it twice
Gap can come from the dealer, the lender, or in some cases the auto carrier, and the terms differ. Availability depends on the carrier and vehicle. We will not invent a price or tell you one source is always cheaper. Bring the paperwork and we will tell you honestly whether it looks like you already have it.
Trading in or replacing a car
Tell us the car you are trading and the date it left your hands. We replace or remove it so you are not paying for a vehicle you no longer own, and we make sure the new one is covered from the minute you take it. If you are keeping the old car as a second vehicle, or handing it to a family member in another household, that is a different conversation — say so on the call.
What to send us
- Year, make, model, and VIN (a photo of the window sticker or buyer’s order works)
- Lender or lease company name and the address on the contract
- Required deductible, if the paperwork lists one
- Who will drive it most, and where it will be garaged
- The car you are trading or replacing, if any
- Whether the dealer sold gap or a service contract, so we do not duplicate it
- Delivery date and time if it is the same day
Colby’s years in mortgage lending help on the finance side of these files — lienholder wording and proof-of-insurance requests are familiar territory.
How this agency places it
We are a Farmers Insurance agency. Colby Neal is a third-generation Farmers agent. Farmers is the first conversation for the auto file, and we bundle with home or renters when it helps the household. If Farmers cannot place the risk, we look through Kraft Lake and tell you which path we are on.
Amanda runs the agency; Dani handles a lot of the service file; Jordan works with us on new business. English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Licensed in Arizona, California, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Call or text (480) 860-0860 / text the same number. Say “new car” and send the VIN. We will not send you to an online bind widget as the plan.

FAQ
Do I need to call before I drive a new car off the lot in Scottsdale? Call before you sign if you can, and before you drive away at the latest. The dealer, the lender, and Arizona MVD registration all want proof of insurance, and some policies only extend coverage to a newly acquired vehicle for a limited time. Call or text (480) 860-0860 with the VIN.
What does a lender or lease company usually require on a financed car? Most require comprehensive and collision, list themselves as loss payee or lienholder (or additional insured on many leases), and set a maximum deductible. The exact wording is on the finance or lease paperwork. Bring that page and we will match the policy to it.
What is gap insurance on a car? Gap, sometimes called loan or lease payoff, can help pay the difference between what the car is worth at the time of a total loss and what you still owe. Whether it fits depends on your down payment, loan term, and what the dealer or lease already includes. We will not quote a price on this page.
Is Arizona minimum liability enough for a new car? Arizona’s minimum is 25/50/15. That is the legal floor, not a recommendation, and it does nothing for damage to your own car. If you are financing, the lender will also require physical damage coverage. We talk limits, UM/UIM, and umbrella on the call.
I am trading in my old car. What happens to that policy? Tell us the vehicle you are trading and the date. We swap or remove it so you are not paying for a car you no longer own, and keep the new one covered from the moment you take it. If the old car had a loan, the payoff paperwork should match.
